Carina had thought that the jump was only a small one, but the rock seemed much higher when it came to her turn. The others were bobbing about in the water in their orange buoyancy aids, shouting encouragement. She closed her eyes, jumped, and was soon bobbing about, too. A pleasant sensation. She glanced up at the cliff and saw masses of sea pinks growing in clefts near the top, looking pretty against the dark background. She swam behind the others to the place where the scramble back up the cliff was possible.

After much splashing and shrieks of enjoyment, the four youngsters were soon out of the water and scrambling up the low rocky cliff after Jamie. Reaching the top, they shouted for Carina to join them.

She felt surprisingly elated as she stood beside them, breathing heavily.

‘Okay everyone?’ said Jamie.

‘Brilliant!’

‘Great!’

‘Can we do it again?’

‘Please!’

Carina was as eager as the others to do the same thing again, but this time Jamie took them further along the cliff path to where they had to do some manoeuvring across rocks and along a narrow ledge.

‘That’s enough,’ Jamie said at last, ignoring their cries of protest. ‘Lunch now and then back to Mum and Dad to see if they want to join in the afternoon session.’

Carina felt tired but exhilarated at the same time. ‘I can’t believe I’ve just done that,’ she marvelled. The experience had been so fantastic she had no idea how long they had taken. It must be the most easily accessible, ultimate get-away-from-your-worries activity, because, within reason, anyone could do it.

She and the two girls changed out of their wetsuits in the van and emerged laughing and talking. The boys were on a high, too, demanding even greater cliff routes for the afternoon session.

Carina glanced at her watch. ‘I must get back,’ she said.

‘What’s the rush?’ Jamie said. ‘You saw the lunch hampers in the van. Plenty for all.’

‘Not for me.’

‘Lighten up, Carina. You’re creating the wrong atmosphere. These people are on holiday, remember.’

‘But I’m not,’ she reminded him. ‘And I’m already in trouble because of arranging accommodation for them. I don’t want to make things worse by being away for too long.’

‘Belinda should be down on her knees to you in gratitude for getting another property booked up for the week,’ Jamie said.

‘She likes to vet her clients herself,’ Carina explained.

‘Well, the Dawleys are obviously not from outer space, so what’s the worry?’

‘It makes good sense,’ said Carina shortly.

‘Then go, if that’s the way you feel.’

The words, And don’t come back, seemed to hover in the air.

Carina’s orders for the afternoon were to remain at Spray Point to take delivery of three small TV sets. The message from Belinda was on the answer phone when she got back and she was to acknowledge the call as soon as she received it.

‘Where were you?’ asked Belinda, when she did so. ‘I phoned half an hour ago.’

‘Just checking that all was well with the Dawleys,’ Carina said. ‘The children had their first coasteering session.
